Steamboat Stadt Luzern

The flagship

The stately steamboat Stadt Luzern is the flagship of our fleet. It is also the largest and most impressive passenger vessel on Lake Lucerne. With its maritime appearance and wide funnel, it mimics the great ocean liners of the early 20th century. Built in 1928 as the last paddle steamer for a Swiss lake and fitted with elegant Art Deco saloon, the vessel hosted Queen Elizabeth II on a state visit in 1980. This elegant ship is best suited for exclusive events from spring to autumn.

The Queen of Lake Lucerne is back

The majestic paddle steamer Stadt Luzern is the proud flagship of Lake Lucerne, leading an impressive SGV fleet that includes 18 other vessels. Originally built in 1928 as the last steamboat for a Swiss lake, the stately ship can look back on a rich history and has hosted numerous illustrious guests during the past 90 years. In July 1940 General Henri Guisan and the entire Swiss Army officer corps sailed on the steamer from Lucerne to the Rütli meadow for an important military conference during a precarious wartime moment, following the fall of France.

A few years later in August 1947 Evita Perón, the wife of Argentinian president Juan Perón, was ceremoniously hosted on PS Stadt Luzern during an official visit and made a record-setting cruise to Tellsplatte in just 1 hour and 22 minutes. Another famous guest on state visit was Queen Elizabeth II in May 1980, when she enjoyed the fine amenities of the iconic flagship for a lovely Alpine cruise. In honor of the British regent, the ship's upper deck lounge was later renamed "Queen's Salon".

The remarkable story of PS Stadt Luzern closely reflects 20th century history and as the ship approaches its centenary anniversary later this decade, it has once again been rejuvenated and stylishly renovated.  Over 80 000 hours of labor and 13.3 million CHF have been invested into returning this wonderful ship to its original glory and historic luster. On 1 May 2021, the paddle steamer has re-enter public service and is in charge for special culinary cruises such as Wine & Dine or Jazz & Steam. Naturally, this amazing ship can also be chartered for private cruises, such as corporate functions, elegant weddings or unique family celebrations.
